چکیده

Some workers bargain with prospective employers before accepting a job. Others could bargain, but find it undesirable, because their right to bargain has induced a sufficiently favorable offer, which they accept. Yet others perceive that they cannot bargain over pay; they regard the posted wage as a take-it-or-leave-it opportunity. Theories of wage formation point to substantial differences in labor-market equilibrium between bargained and posted wages. The fraction of workers hired away from existing jobs is another key determinant of equilibrium, because a worker with an existing job has a better outside option in bargaining than does an unemployed worker. Our survey measures the incidences of wage posting, bargaining, and on-the-job search. We find that about a third of workers had precise information about pay when they first met with their employers, a sign of wage posting. We find that another third bargained over pay before accepting their current jobs. And about 40 percent of workers could have remained on their earlier jobs at the time they accepted their current jobs. ∗ Hall’s research is part of the program on Economic Fluctuations and Growth of the NBER.

Nber Working Paper Series Measuring What Employers Really Do about Entry Wages over the Business Cycle

In models recently published by several influential macroeconomic theorists, rigidity in the real wages that firms pay newly hired workers plays a crucial role in generating realistically large cyclical fluctuations in unemployment. There is remarkably little evidence, however, on whether employers’ hiring wages really are invariant to business cycle conditions. We review the small empirical li...

Wage Differences between Incumbents and External Candidates

This paper compares the hourly wage of employees who change jobs within their firm with that of workers who are hired from other employers in the external labor market. We use a Dutch data set of about 45 thousand workers who are employed at 1,838 firms over in the years 1997 and 1998. We have the following empirical results: Workers who moved internally are in the higher segments of the wage d...

Who Gets Good Jobs? The Hiring Decisions and Compensation Structures of Large Firms

Does Standardized Information in Online Markets Disproportionately Benefit Job Applicants from Less Developed Countries?

We examine trade in services between employers from developed countries (DCs) and workers from less developed countries (LDCs) on an online platform for contract labor. We report evidence that 1) DC employers are less likely to hire LDC compared to DC workers even after controlling for a wide range of observables, 2) workers with standardized and verified work history information are more likel...

14.662 S15 Labor Economics II Lecture 22

A long literature in economics has documented evidence of what are called interindustry wage differentials. For example, a well-known JEP article by Richard Thaler opens with an anecdote about a secretary who was hired in his department and a few months later left to accept a job as a secretary at IBM, which at least at the time paid its secretaries much more than other local employers. This ex...
